Zeeland Blog 1

Hi all,

It has been a while since you heard from us, sorry about that, but we are still alive and well!!

The province of Zeeland, Lourens ' birthplace is a beautiful province. Lots to see and explore, so this is a snap shot of what we have been up to so far.

As it is the local holiday season, and Zeeland is a popular destination , because usually it has the best weather of Holland during the summer months, there is a hive of activities going on.

Some shots of a display of the local " workhorses" used in the olden days for working on the farm, called "trekpaarden". They look simular to Clysdales but a bit smaller and stocky. Note the "socks" on their legs. Also a few shots of the country side.

We had many friends and family visiting and we went for bike rides and walks through the country, over the old dykes from earlier times, when they formed the protection from the sea, but lie now in the middle of the landscape. Wonderful for walks and bike tours.

We had a wonderful chat with one of the few shepherds left who crisscross the country side with their flocks. The reason being: tourist attraction, a environmental friendly way to keep the grass and wildflowers along the verge of the country roads short and to distribute the seeds.....!

Went to admire a collection of beautiful old and new samplers displayed in the Maria Magdalene Church in Goes. This church has a wonderful organ and we had a change to listen to one of the concerts there. "Food for the soul"!

We went to another island, named Tholen, to visit a display of apparently the longest sampler of the world, 125 mtr., made by many of the women of Zeeland during 1999 , to be ready by the end of 2000, the Year of Textile. This Sampler has been on display in Japan and France. One sampler particarly took my interest, about walking along the sea.....! Apparently every participant could make an impression of her love of Zeealand, and that one took my fancy!

On one of the occasionly rainy days so far, we went on a trip with the steam train. Lourens was very interested in the locomotive and how it operated. A rainy day well spent.
