Turkey - Istanbul (2)

Hi all,
The story continues......, In the afternoon we visited The Blue Mosque and did some " shopping".....!

The Blue Mosque. So named for the blue tiles ( Iznik tiles) adorning the walls of the interior.

Us standing in the atrium in front of the ablution fountain. ( where people can clean themselves before prayer in the mosque).

Interior view of the mosque.

One of the minarets, seen from the atrium of the blue mosque.

Walled Column, 32 m in height, situated in the middle of the Hippodrome. Made of dressed stone in various sizes.

Plaque at the bottom of the Column.

The Serpentine Column. Names of the 31 Greek city states ,who participated in the battles, are written on the intertwined serpents.

Plaque in front of the Serpent Column.

Time for something different. Interested in a carpet? Well, Hanneke was.....! She bought a carpet for her bedroom in Kununurra .

Many to choose from!

Then it was off to the bazaar!

A lot of things to tempt us!

Lots of bowls, tiles, cups and all sorts of things. The pottery is popular amongst tourists.

What else can we buy? Many interesting items to look at.

Something to satisfy a sweet tooth!
Buying roasted chestnuts .

We could choose from many street restaurants. Even advertising their menu in Dutch!

Another restaurant.

Woman preparing the flatbreads.

Baking the flatbreads in a " tandoori" like oven.

One is ready!

Another very interesting day comes to an end. Not too late to bed, up early the following morning for our trip to Gallipoli Peninsula.

The story will continue in the next blog.

Bye for now, L&S. xxxx

  1. Wow -some great photos of your Turkish trip. I remember seeing some of these places such as the Bazaar and the Cistern on the Australian version of The Amazing Race. ANZAC Cove is a special place :-)
